A career map is a plan for where you want to be and see yourself in the future. To begin with first it must be understood and be able to visualize where you want to see yourself in this world in one year, three years and five years.
Where would you start?
- The first step in mapping is identifying the professions you know and carefully labeling them. If you are less satisfied with professions known to you then gather the information through interviews, focus groups, meetings, and advice from Career call experts and write them.
- The next step is bit tricky, all you need is little bit of calmness. Draw a pie diagram, illustrate the percentage of people profession you know in each of the core professions. Now you can find and see where there are the most and the least career options.

Career maps should involve following considerations:

- Behavioral strengths, traits and personal characteristics required to achieve success of goals and vision in a profession
- Profession-centered competencies, consisting of clusters of knowledge and abilities that are required for excellence in a given profession
- Business competencies which include skill sets like conflict resolution, cultural awareness, knowledge and abilities required in order to work effectively in an organization
- leadership competencies which include skill sets, knowledge and abilities required in order to become leaders in an organization (mentoring skills, planning and organizing, etc.);
- Functional accomplishments meaning achieving mastery in a profession as described and practiced by experts regardless length of a career
- Career paths, choosing a path by identifying the skills and abilities needed to progress within the job areas in today's marketplace.
- Developmental experiences that can help one to develop as a leader in crafting a smart career path and on-the-job learning;
- Formal education is necessary for career development
Achievement tip: Jot down what success means to you on a paper, and then ask yourself if your current job and its long-term path will help you achieve that success.
Now your one-, three- and five-year plans will start taking shape. Based on what you wrote about your goals, start to identify what action steps you need to take. Consider the knowledge, experiences and skills you will need to acquire over the next few years to achieve what you want. Brainstorm yourself in knowing how networking, training or education can help you achieve those goals. Think about what skills you can acquire or practice, such as communication skills, motivating others or managing change. What kind of moral support do you need to create to get there? Which friends and family members can help keep you on track in your career journey?
It's also important to identify any roadblocks, humps that may encounter on your way to career success for every’s year's plan. Do not panic start thinking about how you can handle them or manage or even avoid them if possible.
On concluding step, keep your five-year vision in mind, write down five big goals, and two or three action steps under each goal which will help you in framing your plan more formal. Next, talk to a supportive friend, partner or family member, teachers, career counselors about your plan this week.
